Tema congestion underscores the cost of inspection bottlenecks

With some 70% of containers at Tema's Terminal 3 undergoing physical inspection, Ghana's flagship terminal shows how process friction erodes modern capacity — a lesson for regional ports.

Congestion at Tema Port Terminal 3, Ghana (Food Business MEA)

ACCRA, Ghana — Tema Port's Terminal 3, which has handled some 2.5 million TEU in 2026, is facing congestion as an estimated 70% of containers undergo physical inspection, creating yard pressure and slowing cargo release despite the terminal's modern equipment.

The situation is a case study for the region: deep-water berths and ship-to-shore cranes alone do not deliver fast ports. Inspection regimes, customs processes, gate flow and yard discipline determine whether physical capacity converts into real throughput.

It is precisely this gap that Ducor Terminals' model addresses. Our Terminal Operating System manages container movements, gate activities and yard positioning digitally, and our inland container depot concept relieves seaport congestion by moving cargo processing away from the congested waterfront — keeping trade flowing even as volumes grow.
