Container rates hold elevated as congestion and disruption shape the market

Freight indices remain firm amid Red Sea diversions and port congestion, with analysts warning that underlying overcapacity could reshape the market from 2027.

Global container shipping entered September 2026 with freight rates holding at elevated levels. The Drewry World Container Index steadied at around US$4,476 per 40ft container for a second consecutive week, while DHL Global Forwarding reports rates up roughly 143% year-on-year as prolonged peak-season demand meets severe congestion and tight effective capacity.

Red Sea and Hormuz disruptions continue to distort networks, with carriers managing capacity through service suspensions and blank sailings. Analysts caution, however, that a significant orderbook of newbuild vessels is accumulating beneath the surface — pointing to a possible market inflection from 2027 as the supply overhang emerges.

For West African shippers, the near-term picture means firm rates and variable schedule reliability. Routing through efficient, uncongested gateways with strong landside coordination — the operating model Ducor Terminals is building at Monrovia — remains the most effective defence against volatility.
