A US$2.5 billion deep-seaport agreement in Nigeria signals continued large-scale investment in West African port capacity — and rising competition among regional gateways.

APM Terminals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the proposed US$2.5 billion Badagry Deep-Seaport in Nigeria, as the country's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy led a federal delegation to Denmark to strengthen maritime cooperation and attract port infrastructure investment.

The project is among the largest port development commitments in West Africa and reflects a wider regional trend: governments and global terminal operators investing ahead of trade growth, with deep-water capacity and modern handling systems as the differentiators.

For Liberia, the message is clear — the race for West African cargo will be won on efficiency, cost and reliability. Investment in terminal capability, digital systems and hinterland connectivity at Monrovia positions the country to compete for corridor and gateway volumes as regional capacity expands.
